SYRACUSE, N.Y., February 22, 2018- The official applications for the GENIUS Olympiad annual competition are open today. The international competition open to all high school students focuses on promoting environmental issues to build a more eco-friendly system. This year the competition is held at the State University of New York at Oswego from June 11 to June 16, 2018. Competition topics include business, robotics, science, writing and visual performing arts. All projects have a strong emphasis on environmental issues.
"We at SUNY Oswego are excited to host the Global Environmental Issues Olympiad. Last year's event was enormously successful with more than 600 participants from 54 countries and 35 states competing in science, art, creative writing and architectural design. It was also highly competitive, bringing the rigorous and imaginative thinking of some of the best young minds around the world to our campus," Deborah Stanley said. Stanley serves as the university's president. All students who participate receive a certificate for ambition and overall involvement. Each category judges and awards prizes separately, gifting medals in gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention sections. Up to $10,000 is distributed to students in the form of SUNY Oswego scholarship money. Acceptance letters to the university are also gifted to certain winners in the various categories. "I love the experience of GENIUS Olympiad. I feel this event is not a simple science fair. I feel like it is a learning experience and world-class cultural exchange," Sydney Portman said. Portman competed in the 2016 competition and won a gold medal for her visual display of solar-powered international universities. "I hope students understand the impact of this event: we have the potential to implement real change in the world because you never know who is watching. I encourage any high school student to apply." The university is expected to host 1,200 students and supervisors, a 15% increase from 2017. The application deadline is March 1, 2018. The committee announces finalists on March 27, 2018. About GENIUS Olympiad: Dr. Fehmi Damkaci founded the GENIUS Olympiad competition, serving as a chair of the department of chemistry at SUNY Oswego.
